The two tech emperors – Microsoft and Google – have always been each other’s strongest opponent for achieving supremacy in tech industry. The rivalry between these bigwigs (Google and Microsoft) is getting fierce with time, each one trying to chip away market share in each other's core products and services.
Whether its operating system, search, cloud or mobile, the two tech titans are seeing each other as a major threat and have entered into an intense war.
While Google’s persistent expansion is battering Microsoft on virtually every front, the software giant too has set its sights on taking its new rival down a notch or two.
Many analysts are predicting that this is not a war that is going to end by one or two battles. This is going to be a prolonged activity.
Let’s have an overview of the latest scenario between Google and Microsoft:
Search
Search is the key to Google's success since Web ads account for more than 90 per cent of its revenue. Despite Microsoft’s numerous efforts (including the launch of Bing search engine), Google leads the race with a wide margin. Microsoft has spent millions of dollars and suffered huge losses to challenge Google's dominance in search market.
A recent report suggests that the Redmond conglomerate is planning to set up several changes to its search interface and HTML links to take on Google in coming year.
Although Google still owns the search market, but Bing is gradually gaining ground and has caught user’s attention. But will it surpass Google’s dominance in search anytime soon or not, nothing can be said on this.
Operating system
Windows is the significant reason for Microsoft’s stardom and existence. This is actually Microsoft’s bread and butter. The software giant earns over $60 billion in revenue every year and enjoys the supreme dominance. Yet Windows Vista showed that it is not invincible.
On the other hand, Google has jumped directly into Microsoft’s home turf with Google Chrome OS. Let’s see, whether it can surpass Windows or not? For the time being, it is little unlikely to believe.
Cloud
Cloud has become the latest fad in tech industry. There's an increasing demand for moving all sorts of office applications to the Cloud. Microsoft recently launched Office 365 software suite and took a major move into the mobile, Internet-enabled world of cloud computing.
On the other hand, Google has its own apps for business including Gmail, Google Calendar and Docs and other web-based applications geared for corporate customers could be the biggest threat to Office 365's success.
Browser market
The Google-Microsoft rivalry also extends into the browser arena as Google Chrome is fast eating up Internet Explorer’s market share. IE has posted yet another significant decline in the market share, while Google Chrome reported a stupendous increase in its share. Chrome’s rapid adoption would likely end Microsoft’s dominance which it is enjoying for more than a decade.
Analysts believe, both Microsoft and Google are concentrating on each other's relative weaknesses and working on their respective strengths, so it is expected that the battle between Google and Microsoft is going to be one of the biggest in history books.
For now, all the best to both the rivals.
