Many people seem to think that the world is divided into two kinds of people: the technologically savvy and the technologically challenged. The reality is that most people fall somewhere in between— they know enough to get by and maybe fix minor computer problems on their own, but don’t have the proper training to fix major issues with their machine. Things like frozen screens, slow internet browsing and software that’s acting up can often be solved from the comfort of your home with a few simple steps. However, if you’re having trouble with any of the following parts of your computer, the best course of action is to call in an IT professional.
The Motherboard
The motherboard serves as the main port that every piece of computer hardware connects to and is the “glue” that holds your whole PC together. It’s also one of the easiest components to break or damage. A small scratch could mean disaster for your PC, so unless you have the technical skills to handle such a delicate and vital part of your computer, it’s probably best to leave it to the professionals.
The CPU
The CPU (or central processing unit) is also a tricky component to repair on your own. The CPU acts as your computer’s “brain” and it can be expensive to replace. Because it is inserted directly into the motherboard and locked in place, removing it might cause you to accidentally damage your motherboard. In addition, it is covered by a heatsink, a metal object that is designed to keep it cool. Heatsinks can be a challenge to remove and improper handling can harm the CPU.
The Power Supply
With the wattage written in large bright letters around the outside and cords spewing from it, the power supply looks intimidating. The power supply is what keeps the computer running and keeping the machine working requires a decent amount of electricity. It’s probably not a good idea to fiddle with the power supply, as your motherboard could get fried from an overload of electricity. Not to mention that anything to do with electricity should be left to the experts.
The Video Card
The video card is a critical component of the computer for running photo or video editing software, games and any other graphic intensive applications. Video cards can be expensive to replace and aren’t easy to fix on your own. A computer hardware expert may be able to fix a damaged video card, but often times they simply need to be replaced. In other words, it’s simply not worth the risk to try to fix it yourself.
The Monitor
The monitor is another part of your computer that is tricky to fix, even for IT professionals. If pixels have burned out, opening up the monitor is only guaranteed to cause more problems. Sometimes the best solution is simply to replace a malfunctioning monitor. Regardless, if you start noticing issues with your monitor, avoid tampering with it and contact an IT expert .
